LANSING, Mich: Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4090, a bipartisan bill to transfer ownership of the Detroit Detention Center to the City of Detroit, saving taxpayer money and supporting smoother operations at the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). Including today’s legislation, Governor Whitmer has signed a record 1,506 bipartisan bills into law since taking office.

“Today, I am signing another commonsense, bipartisan bill into law that will help save taxpayers money by allowing for the sale of the DDC to the City of Detroit,” said Governor Whitmer. “This sale will also support government efficiency by ensuring resources are put back in local governments. I’ll work with anyone to keep finding ways to make life more affordable for families and make state government more responsive and effective for the people it serves.”

House Bill 4090, sponsored by state Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), will put money back in Detroit taxpayers’ pockets by authorizing the sale of a 96-acre property in Wayne County that houses the Detroit Detention Center (DDC) to the City of Detroit. Given that the City of Detroit is ready to full staff and manage the facility, transferring ownership of the DDC would free up staff and resources within MDOC to use at other sites. Not only will this save Wayne County taxpayers’ their hard-earned dollars, but it will support smoother operations at MDOC.

“This act will provide the City of Detroit with the ability to fully operate and staff the DDC and frees up MDOC personnel to assist in other areas of the state,” said state Representative Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn). “It is a win-win situation for all.”
