The Flint River Watershed Coalition has just received word that our application submitted to the National Parks Service in May of 2017 has been approved. The Flint River Water Trail, a 68 mile stretch of the Flint River from Lapeer to Montrose, has been approved as a National Recreation Trail – National Water Trail. This designation acknowledges seven key attributes of a Water Trail, including community support for the Water Trail, implementing conservation best management practices along its course, implementing education programs, maintaining the trail, planning for trail improvements, providing public information (signage, etc.), and of course ensuring access to recreation. 

 

The Flint River Water Trail achieved State Water Trail designation in December, 2018.

 

FRWC Executive Director Rebecca Fedewa states: We are thrilled about achieving this designation, demonstrating to the country what we already know about the Flint River – that it is an incredible natural resource that brings invaluable recreational opportunities to each community it touches. 

 

This was a highly collaborative effort that included the FRWC, Genesee Metropolitan Regional Planning Commission, Genesee County Parks, and the City and Townships of all the communities along the Flint River Water Trail.
