Flint’s largest brownfield to be catalyst for economic development, growth

On June 5, Ashley Capital and partners celebrated the groundbreaking of Flint Commerce Center. The development will result in roughly 3.5 million-square-feet of light industrial space at the former site of Buick City, which employed nearly 30,000 people at its peak and formally ceased operations in 2010.

Not only will project revitalize 350 acres that have been underutilized for decades, but it also offers new inventory to market to prospective companies, says Tyler Rossmaessler, executive director of the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, which made the connections necessary to secure the gap financing for the project.

“The Flint Commerce Center will provide critically needed, new speculative development and shovel-ready sites,” Rossmaessler said. “As an economic development professional, that’s exciting. What has long been a symbol of blight and ‘what once was,’ will serve as a catalyst for jobs and investment in North Flint.

“This is a great example of rebirth and a new future for the city.”

FACES of Flint & Genesee Business: Sean Murray

Sean-Murray image

When Rootless Coffee Co. opened in September 2020, they set out to change how coffee was viewed by the masses.

“I had worked in coffee and there was a lot I didn’t like about it,” says Sean Murray, CEO of Rootless Coffee Co. “People were using plain paper bags with plain labels, the names felt very exclusive and limiting. It seemed pretty pretentious.”

But Murray had an idea for how to change all of that. After working in the craft beer industry, Murray got inspiration from how those businesses were marketing their products.

“In the early 2000s, these companies used cool art and cool names to get people interested,” said Murray. “People who were used to drinking Bud were drinking IPAs and stouts because it looked cool, and they tried it. We took the same motto with Rootless.”

After significant investments and improvements in recent years, Atlas Valley Golf Club is back in the swing of things.
