ESD: Empower the Next Generation of Engineers

ESD’s Girls in Engineering Academy is changing what’s possible for middle and high school girls across Michigan.

Each year, the academy provides hands-on STEM learning, mentorship from female engineering students, university-campus experiences, and a community where girls see themselves as future engineers—often for the first time. And it works.

Girls in GEA design real engineering projects, code in multiple languages, build drones, tour industry workplaces, and spend summers living and learning on college campuses. Many improve their grades, grow in confidence, and set their sights on engineering careers they never imagined.

As one student shared, “I don’t think I would have dissected a frog, built a drone, or learned Java at my age without GEA.”

Your support makes experiences like these possible.

ESD invests in students beginning in sixth grade and supports them through their college experience. Contributions go directly to these outreach programs:

  • Future City Competition for grades 6-8
  • Girls and Boys in Engineering Academies for grades 6-12
  • Scholarships of $2,000 each to high school and college students
  • Student Chapters at 14 Michigan universities

Thanks to our donors, we are able to help girls discover their place in engineering.
