Rep. Joe Tate expected to serve as 2023-24 Speaker

LANSING, MI – Many Michigan voters agree that the 2022 midterm elections did not disappoint with a full slate of notable candidates and pivotal ballot proposals. House Democrats – returning members as well as new legislators – are among those who are heralding Tuesday’s results.

“This is a great day for Michigan,” said Rep. Joe Tate, D-Detroit, the presumed House Speaker. “We stood up for what Michiganders care about most – education, health care, infrastructure, and preserving and ensuring the rights of all Michigan residents, including a woman’s right to choose. We want all residents to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

Rep. Tate led fundraising efforts for House Democrats as finance chair, raising more than $4 million to boost key races. He personally donated $394,000. In the November election, Democrats won 56 seats to take the majority in the 110-member House. In 2023, Democrats will control both the House and Senate along with the executive branch with Gov. Whitmer.

“A new era of opportunity for all is dawning in Michigan. I expect great things for our state that a unified caucus will accomplish in the days ahead,” said Tate.

The House Democrat Caucus is expected to hold leadership elections Nov. 10 to select its speaker and other key positions for the 2023-24 legislative term.
