LANSING Mich. – Construction will soon begin on two downtown Lansing developments that will bring over 100 affordable apartments to the city. The projects are being developed by the Lansing Housing Commission (LHC) and are the first new construction by the office in over 20 years.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday to officially kick off the next phase of development, with local officials, including Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, joining representatives from LHC and Wolverine Building Group to celebrate this substantial investment in the city center.

Together the two projects represent $41.2 million in new construction, bringing LHC’s total housing investments in the area to $114.3 million over the past five years. KitchenBoth buildings will be located on Grand Avenue, with easy access to public transit, making them ideal for working class commuters.

Riverview 220 is being constructed directly across the street from the CATA Transportation Center at 420 S. Grand Ave. It will feature seven market rate apartments and 56 apartments reserved for low-income residents along with retail space.Apartment Grand Vista Place, located just south of Lenawee Street, will include an additional 55 affordable apartments. LHC Executive Director Doug Fleming expressed excitement at seeing the developments move forward. “This is a big deal,” Fleming said. “These new apartments will significantly increase housing access to lower-income populations in the area. It’s something we’ve been working towards for a long time.

Mayor Schor thanked LHC for its dedicated efforts on behalf of area residents and offered optimistic remarks on the impact he expects the expanded housing to have downtown.

“Developments like Riverview 220 and Grand Vista Place are exactly what we need downtown,” Schor said. “Together, in conjunction with other projects underway throughout the city, they will dramatically increase available housing supply, leading to an influx of residents and broadening the commercial base.

“I’m incredibly grateful to the Lansing Housing Commission for the work they’ve done in getting these developments off the ground and look forward to collaborating with them on future initiatives.”

Kurt Fritz, director of construction for Wolverine Building Group, had this to say, “The Wolverine team is excited to work alongside Lansing Housing Commission to bring additional housing to downtown Lansing. We are honored to continue being part of the solution to the housing shortage across the state of Michigan.”

Construction on the two developments is scheduled to begin in late March with occupancy anticipated mid-2026.
