Opinion: Want to Increase College Graduates in Michigan? Expand Dual Enrollment

In an op-ed for Bridge Michigan, Greg Handel, the Chamber’s Chief Education and Talent Officer, and Peter Provenzano, Oakland Community College (OCC)’s Chancellor, emphasize the importance of expanding dual enrollment programs and how OCC is taking key steps to expand dual enrollment outreach, partnership, and support through the Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees Community College Collaborative.

Why it matters: Dual enrollment programs provide high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. These programs help students defer the cost of college and boost college rates for low-income and first generation students by lowering both financial and psychological barriers to higher education for students and families.

Ultimately, dual enrollment will increase educational attainment, strengthen the workforce, and help Michigan achieve long-term prosperity.
