Restoring Michigan’s Competitive Edge: Chamber Supports New Economic Development Tools

Last week, the Chamber submitted a letter of support for Senate Bills 472 and 473, legislation designed to equip the state with critical tools to retain and attract high-wage jobs.

While the Chamber endorses the framework of the two bills, it recommended specific refinements in publicly submitted testimony

Federal SNAP and Medicaid Changes Threaten Michigan’s Talent and Equity Goals

Michigan’s Sixty by 30 goal depends on several factors. Among these, ensuring that students have stable access to food, health care, and education is a central priority.

Recent federal changes to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid benefits, as outlined by The Institute for College Access and Success, threaten the stability that students and residents rely on.

What’s at stake: Changes to these programs heighten the risk of diminished access to fundamental resources, potentially impeding progress toward the Sixty by 30 goal.

The Chamber will continue to inform and collaborate with partners and reinforce support systems that enable students to learn, work, and thrive.

Chamber Helps Negotiate Solution for Senate Bill 700

On Tuesday, the Michigan Senate voted out Senate Bill 700, which would prevent the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Agency from pursuing fraudulent unemployment claims that occurred during the pandemic due to administrative errors. This bill was a “red alert” moment for the Chamber, as it was originally written that Michigan would pay the federal government restitution in the tune of over $2 billion from the UI Trust Fund, therefore triggering a tax increase on employers in the state.

Chamber Perspective: The Chamber was present in the lobby for the entire Senate’s session day and served as the lead negotiator in finding a solution that holds employers harmless. The compromise and final version that passed the Senate ensures that if the state is required to repay the federal government for fraudulent claims, it must use sources outside of the UI Trust Fund.

To advocate for the agreement to be extended and ensure Michigan’s voice is heard, MichAuto’s Director of Government and Community Affairs, Paul Corbett, provided comment in Washington, D.C., on the importance of protecting the industry’s resilience and economic vitality through this process.
