LANSING, Mich. —Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, running as an Independent for governor, is making another stop in Lansing on Monday, April 21st. He’s been hearing directly from business leaders, city officials and students at Michigan State University, listening to what Lansing residents care about most and what they see for the future of their state.
It’s also a big week for Duggan as Mayor of Detroit. Rep. Matt Hall, Rep. Alabas Farhat and Mayor Duggan are leading a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers, law enforcement and community leaders to champion an historic $75 million Public Safety and Violence Prevention Fund to help cities like Lansing fight crime, as well as townships, villages and counties all across Michigan.
This initiative will also provide funding for mental health services and community violence prevention initiatives. Why? Because he believes working together to do the right thing for our state shouldn’t be a political issue. Running as an Independent governor, he hopes to continue this type of work and bring people together across party lines to make Michigan a safer, stronger state for all.
Under Duggan’s leadership, Detroit has seen violent crime hit historic lows through investments in both law enforcement and community-based violence prevention. Now, he’s calling for that same approach across Michigan—putting public safety over politics.
Duggan spoke about the urgent need to prioritize public safety, previewing what he’s hearing from people.
Earlier in April a report from Detroit, Mich. — Indicated that after more than a decade of grit, smart leadership and relentless focus, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has been named America’s most effective mayor by Governing Magazine. This recognition proves his legacy as the leader behind one of the greatest civic turnarounds in American history.
Detroit didn’t just turn a corner. It set the standard for revitalization. Once a city synonymous with decline, Detroit is now a model of progress, proving that strategic investment, strong public-private partnerships and community-driven governance can drive lasting change.
Under Mayor Duggan’s leadership, Detroit has achieved extraordinary milestones:
Population growth for the first time since 1957: Reversing decades of decline, signaling a new confidence in the city’s future.
Lowest homicide rate in over 50 years: Demonstrating the effectiveness of crime reduction initiatives and community-focused policing.
Over $1 billion invested in affordable housing: Ensuring thousands of Detroiters have access to quality, stable housing.
Transforming blight into opportunity: Record numbers of abandoned buildings have been demolished or rehabilitated, paving the way for new housing, businesses and community spaces.
A national stage for Detroit: The city hosted the largest NFL Draft in history with over 770,000 fans flooding downtown and showcasing Detroit to the world.
A city that believes in itself again: Beyond the numbers, Detroit’s resurgence is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.
Mike Duggan has made one thing clear: this kind of progress isn’t reserved for just one city. America’s Most Effective Mayor is ready to take on the state of Michigan.
