Cycling, Electric Grid Defection, Frequent Flier Miles and More

FinanceCycling has an unusual problem: Bikes are often too awesome. Frequently made of expensive materials and featuring up to 33 speeds, bicycles can be intimidating. It is a reason that the number of people cycling has barely budged in recent years, while participation has soared for running. But there is new hope for cycling. Bike-makers are paying more attention to people interested in zipping to the coffee shop instead of through the Pyrenees.

“Grid defection” – the idea that solar-and-battery technology will lead people to cancel their electric service – is a growing concern in the utility business. But utilities can take solace in the fact that early adopters still find the grid useful. It offers backup power and a place to sell their excess home electricity production.

If you’re still collecting frequent-flier miles, you may be missing the points.  Travelers continue to be frustrated by the inability to cash in frequent-flier miles for popular flights. Seats are often limited or nonexistent, and airlines more often ask for huge numbers of miles above basic levels to get award tickets.
