Jeffrey and Marybeth caught up with Brian Wheeler, Senior Public Information Director, Consumers Energy, Jackson, MI. He discusses the recent decision by Consumers Energy to close down the “Classic Seven” Coal Plants. Their discussion covers this legacy and also carries over into the timely opening of C.E.’s first Community Solar Power Plant opened at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI on Monday April 18, 2016. Becoming the largest community solar project in Michigan, this power plant generates up to 3 megawatts, or enough electricity to serve 600 homes. The energy provider is building a second site at Western Michigan University, which is expected to open later this summer. Brian also shares how Consumers Energy stays up with changes in Lansing and Washington concerning the shift to forms of clean energy in the portfolio. CE’s customers are supporting the development of solar energy by enrolling in the new Solar Gardens program. They can express interest and learn more about solar Gardens online at www.ConsumersEnergy.com/solargardens.
