The growth of homelessness in Michigan during the pandemic has been devastating and is a dire situation that more and more families are facing. It’s one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about supporting the work of Haven House this year. Haven House’s mission is to house and support families faced with homelessness on their paths to stable homes. Tragically, most families that seek refuge at shelters are separated and children are frequently put into the foster care system. Homelessness in childhood is a trauma that is considered an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE). ACEs are proven to have long-term negative effects on children in critical areas like education, life expectancy, employment, addiction, poverty, and crime. Removing the potential for any ACE experience, like homelessness, can provide a long-term positive impact on children’s lives.
