CAMW! and KTM Industries

Capital Area Michigan Works! (CAMW!) will be recognizing regional manufacturing partner KTM Industries at an upcoming statewide Michigan Works! Impact Award ceremony on March 24, 2022. Established in 2002, KTM Industries is a producer of Green Cell Foam, a unique, natural, environmentally friendly packaging. Thermal insulating and shock absorbing, Green Cell Foam has replaced polystyrene packaging in industries ranging from pharmaceutical to automotive. It is compostable, water soluble and made of annually renewable, non-GMO, good ol’ U.S.-grown cornstarch, proving it is possible to be “green” and make money. In addition to being an environmental steward and an industry leader, KTM Industries is an Employer of Excellence in greater Lansing.

KTM Industries has worked with the CAMW! Business Services Team for many years to customize recruiting strategies and expand their reach into the job seeker market. Through postings on Pure Michigan Talent Connect, social media, and job fairs held onsite virtually, KTM Industries grew from 20 employees to 75 between 2017 and 2018. KTM then more than doubled the size of their Lansing-based workforce to 160 in 2019-20. Many of these new employees have been New Americans and young workers. This increasingly diverse and growing workforce brought with it a change in the mechanics of training, supporting their growing workforce and business.

CAMC Member Spotlight – WIELAND

WIELAND is a new CAMC member in 2022, and the 64-year-old construction firm, headquartered in Lansing, is a pioneer in constructing manufacturing facilities.

“WIELAND has a long history building for the manufacturing industry, both here in Michigan and across the United States,” said Steve Opper, Partner and Vice-President of New Business Development at WIELAND. “Our company’s roots were planted in the late 1950s, and today we are a national leader in the construction of industrial and manufacturing facilities.”

One of WIELAND’s most recent accomplishments is the new Magna Electric Vehicle Structures facility in St. Clair, MI. The 372,000 SF facility has been custom-built for international, tier-one auto supplier, Magna. The just-completed facility will make battery trays for the new GMC Hummer and for future lines of GM-branded trucks.

WIELAND annually completes around $300M of new construction each year and is a regular on Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Top 400 Contractors in America.

“We are excited to join CAMC and look forward to learning and prospering together with other CAMC members,” Opper said.

Manufacturing Data Shared From the Office of Senator Peters

  • Manufacturers had a strong year and remain optimistic for 2022: The 2021 manufacturing survey results show that customer demand and production grew while employment stayed relatively flat.

  • In this tight labor market, what do workers want?: Better work-life balance and prospects for advancement. During last month’s Regional Economic Conditions Conference, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry offered her insights.

  • Workers of color were especially vulnerable to COVID-19 job losses: Pre-existing occupational segregation was a significant factor, especially for Latino/a workers. Workers of color disproportionately lost jobs at the start of the pandemic, and data shows a slow recovery.
