The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), with the help of mutual aid crews, has restored approximately 90% of customers following the tornado that touched down in Lansing Thursday night, with around 2,400 customers remaining to restore power. Work has been continuous the last three days to restore over 22,000 customers, and BWL is still hoping for full restoration by the end of Wednesday.
Over 55 BWL and mutual aid line and tree crews are currently working across our service territory to address approximately 94 downed wires, 35 broken poles and around 50 tree-related service requests.
“We’ve made significant progress on getting customers restored, but we won’t stop until every person has the lights back on,” said BWL General Manager Dick Peffley. “As we press forward, we’re focused on replacing broken poles. It’s a big job given the damage out there, but our incredible crews are working around the clock to get it done safely.”
As part of the ongoing storm response and the commitment to the community, the BWL has partnered with Strange Matter Coffee Co. to offer a complimentary 12 oz. drip coffee or donut tomorrow, Monday, May 19 during business hours from 7am-4pm at their 2010 E. Michigan Ave. location.
“This is just a small thank you to the community for their patience and resilience. Our customers have been very understanding, and we hope this small gesture helps provide some refueling while we continue to make progress throughout our service territory,” said Peffley.
BWL is continuing to urge people to stay at least 25 feet from downed lines.
Customers can check the status of an outage, and report an outage or downed line by calling 866-710-8222, visiting the Outage Center at www.lbwl.com/outagecenter or using the BWL Outage Center mobile app.
