Business by the Bay: Winners Announced

Bay City, MI — The 2025 Business by the Bay Pitch Competition brought excitement, innovation, and community spirit to the stage on Wednesday, November 12, as five Bay County entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas live at John Glenn High School Auditorium. Hosted by the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the event awarded $11,750 in cash prizes to support the growth of local small businesses.

MBN: SBDC BbtB finalistsAfter weeks of preparation and coaching through SBDC-led workshops, the finalists delivered powerful presentations before a panel of judges and a live audience.

Malynnda Stewart, owner of Compassionate Navigation LLC, earned first place and $5,000 for her compassionate care and navigation services supporting families and caregivers through complex healthcare and life transitions.

Lily Boehm, founder of Curious Minds Club, secured second place and $3,500 for her innovative educational program fostering creativity and exploration in young learners.

Ashley Kirby, author and creator of Turkey Bob Books, took home third place and $1,500, while Jennifer Barcia of Sweets and Boujee received $1,000 along with the Fan Favorite Award for her engaging dessert and treat business.

Rounding out the finalists, Maria Sian of Great Lakes Healthcare Training Center earned $750, recognizing her impactful work in healthcare education and workforce development.

“We’ve seen a lot of growth in these contestants from the beginning of this process to the end,” said Michelle Judd, SBDC Consultant and organizer of the Pitch Competition. “Their ideas, determination, and passion for community growth truly embody the spirit of Business by the Bay.”

The event, free and open to the public, drew strong community attendance. Guests enjoyed refreshments, networking, and the opportunity to support their favorite contestants by voting in the fan-favorite contest.

The Business by the Bay Pitch Competition is organized by the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Lake Huron Region with support from local partners and sponsors who are committed to helping entrepreneurs grow, innovate, and thrive in Bay County.

4th Place ($1,000 + Fan Favorite): Jennifer Barcia – Sweets and Boujee
