University Student Internships - Recruitment, Compensation and More

Association Impact
March 29, 2016 11:00 AM

Beth SettjeMSAE learns from Beth Settje, Associate Director at the University of Connecticut, about her perspective of placing students in internships from a university setting. Beth is Vice-President of the Cooperative Educational and Internship Association. From this perspective, she clarifies that interns are not free labor. She discusses part-time jobs versus internships. Internships have to have tasks that tie to learning opportunities.

She also discusses the Fair Labor Standards Act and the 6 prong test with the Department of Labor. She helps outline when to pay for interns and the mentoring required.

Three key elements of intern compliance covered in this playlist:

  • Recruitment and Retention
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Managing the Learning Environment

Donna Oser, CAE hosts Association Impact, which looks into what some of Michigan’s top professional and industry groups are doing to make a positive impact for their members and for the state of Michigan. As part of MSAE, Association Impact works with all associations in Michigan.
