WHAT: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics releases monthly employment situation reports that outline the current unemployment rate and specific household and establishment survey data. In November 2024, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 227,000 and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.2%.

  Other key insights from the report include:

• In November 2024, job gains continued to trend up in health care, leisure and hospitality, government, and social assistance, while the retail trade lost jobs.
  • Employment in leisure and hospitality gained 53,000 jobs in November following little change in October (+2,000 jobs).
• The unemployment rate and number of unemployed people (7.1 million) are higher measures than a year earlier when the jobless rate was 3.7%, and the number of unemployed people was 6.3 million.
