But Big Downward Revisions to Previous Months; Labor Force Contracts
- Employment increased by 216,000 in December according to a survey of businesses, well above consensus, but the details were not as strong. There were big downward revisions to job growth in October and November.
- Private-sector job growth is slowing faster than overall job growth.
- The unemployment rate held steady at 3.7% and remains historically low.
Consistent with a Solid Labor Market Continuing in December
• Initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) fell by 18,000 in the holiday shortened week ending December 30, and remain very low on an historical basis.
• Continuing UI claims fell by 31,000 in the week ending December 23, indicating that firms are not laying off workers, but are cutting back on hiring new ones.
