PNC Chief Economist Gus Faucher: Very Strong Job Growth of 353K in January

Makes Near-Term Fed Rate Cuts Less Likely
  • The January jobs report was much stronger than expected, with job gains of 353,000. There was also a big upward revision to December job growth.
  • The unemployment rate held steady at 3.7%; it has been below 4% for 24 straight months.
  • Wage growth was very strong and reaccelerated on a year-over-year basis.
  • The very strong January jobs report makes a fed funds rate cut in mid-March unlikely.

  • Initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 9,000 to 224,000 in the week ending January 27.
  • The four-week moving average of initial unemployment insurance claims rose modestly to 208,000.
  • Continuing claims jumped by 70,000 to 1.898 million in the week ending January 20.

  • The FOMC adopted an easing bias, but wants further evidence that inflation is moving to 2% over the long run before cutting the fed funds rate.
  • The FOMC kept the fed funds rate unchanged, in a range between 5.25% and 5.50%.
  • The FOMC made no change to its balance sheet policy.
  • PNC expects fed funds rate cuts starting in May, with total cuts of 100 basis points over the course of 2024.
