WASHINGTON, DC – More details are coming out as U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) helped the Senate pass the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that makes historic investments in Michigan infrastructure, including roads, bridges, high-speed internet, electric vehicles, and the Great Lakes that will strengthen our economy. This bill would also boost our economic competitiveness. It also includes robust funding for Peters’ bipartisan STORM Act that was signed into law earlier this year and will help communities address and mitigate shoreline erosion, flooding, and rising water levels. DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) today welcomed $5,476,035 in federal funding for the City of Midland to help address the significant damages and community needs resulting from severe storms and flooding that detrimentally affected the region in May 2020. This funding was awarded by the Office of Community Planning and Development within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), through the agency’s Declared Disaster Recovery Fund (DDRF) grant program. Last year, Peters and Stabenow joined FEMA in surveying the damage caused by the historic flooding and dam failure in Midland County.

Peters Bipartisan Bill to Expand Eligibility for State Maritime Academies Student Incentive Payment Program Advances in Senate

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters’ (MI) bipartisan legislation to expand the age eligibility for the Student Incentive Payment Program through the Maritime Administration advanced in the U.S. Senate, after passing in the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. The Changing Age-Determined Eligibility to Student Incentive Payments (CADETS) Act would expand the Student Incentive Payment Program eligibility age for financial assistance to cadets who attended one of the six State Maritime Academies and commit to a post-graduation service obligation to include any qualified student who will meet the age requirements for enlistment in the U.S. Navy Reserve at their time of graduation. In return for their commitment to serve, cadets can receive up to $32,000 in this incentive payment funding over four years to help offset the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, and living costs. In June, Peters introduced this legislation with U.S. Senators Todd Young (R-IN), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Ed Markey (D-MA) and Mike Braun (R-IN).
