• Initial jobless claims declined to 216,000 for the week ending October 26 from an upwardly revised 228,000 in the prior week. While claims have settled down after rising in the first two weeks of October, they remain elevated in Florida due to the devastation of Hurricane Milton. The insured unemployment rate was unchanged at 1.2% for the week ending October 19.

and Analyzes Policy Reforms to Lessen the Need for Incentives

Livonia, MI, October 29, 2024 – Today, Citizens Research Council of Michigan released a new analysis of Detroit’s use of tax abatements and policy options to wean the city off tax incentives.

• Consumer confidence jumped 9.5 points to 108.7 in October, putting confidence at the highest level since January 2024. Moreover, that is the largest monthly gain since March 2021.
• The increase was broad-based with the present situation component jumping 14.2 points and the expectations component rising a more modest 6.3 points.
