They say every dog has its day. So, since today is National Dog Day, Consumers Energy wants to introduce Spot!

Spot is Consumers Energy’s mobile robot dog. He might not be a canine, but he’s our best friend when it comes to ensuring reliable energy for Michigan homes and businesses. Watch our video here. 

Based out of Jackson, Spot has been patrolling electric substations around the clock since 2021. The 100-pound robot pup uses a thermal camera and provides real-time information to identify “hot spots,” or potential issues, in these industrial-sized hubs of the electric grid. Spot’s work gives Consumers Energy’s human coworkers a leg up to prevent power outages from happening. 

Spot does critical work and represents the kind of innovation that helps power our Reliability Roadmap. That’s Consumers Energy’s plan to reduce the number and length of power outages, with a goal to restore power to every customer in every situation in less than 24 hours. 

We know Spot isn’t as cuddly as some of our furry friends that we’re celebrating today. But let’s give him – and all of our four-legged companions – a round of a-paws!

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan calls for eliminating coal as an energy source in 2025, achieving net-zero carbon emissions and meeting 90% of customers’ energy needs through clean sources, including wind and solar.
