earns top national honor for stroke, diabetes care

LANSING, MI – For the sixth straight year, E.W. Sparrow Hospital and our Comprehensive Stroke Center have received the highest level of recognition for stroke care nationally and, for only the third time, have been honored for leading-edge care to Type 2 Diabetes patients who have had strokes.

The Stroke Center earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines®-Stroke GOLD PLUS achievement award and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus for performance during 2022. Sparrow’s diabetes program has been recognized with the AHA/ASA’s Get with the Guidelines® Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll for providing patients who might be at higher risk for complications the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatment when hospitalized due to stroke.

These awards mean Sparrow meets the rigid standards set by the Get with the Guidelines® initiative and that we provide the most up-to-date treatment leading to more lives saved and reduced disabilities.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. and early detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times.

"This is a testament to the non-wavering commitment, dedication, and effort that E.W. Sparrow Hospital and its collaborative Michigan State University faculty have been putting in to fully serve the Lansing and Mid-Michigan community as the region’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center,” said Anmar Razak, M.D., Medical Director of the Sparrow Comprehensive Stroke Center. “Sparrow is truly a ’one stop - no transfer’ center for the entire spectrum of stroke care and treatments.”

Recognized by The Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, patients at Sparrow are treated by a highly skilled team of physicians, radiologists, and nurses who are specially trained in stroke care and are available 24 hours a day. This allows Sparrow to offer care for the most complex strokes.
