WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (MI) and Gary Peters (MI) today announced that the Michigan Department of Transportation will receive $13,590,831 in funding from the Federal Transit Administration. $6,199,631 will go towards purchasing buses for rural transit agencies across the state. $7,391,200 will go to the City of Alma, the Benzie Transportation Authority, the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority and the Thunder Bay Transportation Authority for rehabilitating and expanding bus terminals. This funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program.

“Public transportation provides a lifeline for many people to make sure they can get to their jobs, doctor appointments, and grocery stores,” said Senator Stabenow. “This funding will make sure that our transportation agencies can continue to provide these vital services, especially for those living in our small towns and rural communities.”

“Michiganders across our state rely on safe, reliable transit to get to work, school and travel around their communities,” said Senator Peters. “These grants will allow rural communities to upgrade aging buses and improve bus facilities, which will enhance safety and service for riders. I was proud to help enact the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which will allow us to expand these kinds of investments to benefit families around our state and contribute to a more sustainable, eco-friendly and energy-efficient future.”

The Federal Transit Administration’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Programs provides funding to replace, renovate and purchase buses, equipment and bus-related facilities in communities across the country. Resources are provided through formula allocations and competitive grants.
