Michigan businesses would be given a seven-day window of time to resubmit a bid for a state contract if the initial lowest bid came from an out-of-state company, under legislation introduced by the Senate Minority Leader and the House Judiciary Committee Chair.
Sen. Jim Ananich (D-Flint) and Rep. Graham Filler (R-DeWitt) teamed up for what they're calling the "Buy Michigan" bills designed to help Michigan companies secure state contracts.
"I cannot imagine a more difficult 12 months for Michigan businesses," Filler said. "In the midst of these challenges, let's show that this Legislature supports Michigan workers. Let's make the procurement process more competitive for Michigan companies."
Filler and Ananich are launching a task force that will include representatives from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM) to further look into the bills.
“The State of Michigan procures over $16 billion in goods and services annually," said Micah Babcock, SBAM's director of government affairs.
"SBAM applauds Sen. Ananich and Rep. Filler on taking the initiative to make sure that as much taxpayer money as possible is reinvested right back into Michigan communities and businesses," Babcock said.
