The Bridging Opportunities Summit will help break down economic barriers; recognize State Sen. Sarah Anthony for championing equitable development

LANSING, Mich.—(Aug. 6, 2024)—As part of its efforts to build a more equitable economy for all, the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) will be convening Michigan’s premier gathering of Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) economic development professionals on Aug. 8.

The first-ever Bridging Opportunities Summit, powered by LEAP and co-sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and Michigan State University’s University Outreach and Engagement, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and learn how they can move their communities forward.

Tony-Willis“Breaking down the barriers faced by historically underrepresented populations is essential to promoting equitable economic development—and BIPOC economic development professionals are on the front line of that fight,” said Tony Willis (left), chief equity development officer for LEAP. “The Bridging Opportunities Summit will give attendees the space and opportunity to bring their authentic selves and share their unique experiences and perspectives as we strive to advance equal economic success.”

Attendees will also hear from experienced BIPOC economic developers and industry leaders during a panel and smaller sessions, dive into critical issues, and enjoy music by Ozay Moore, founder of All of the Above Hip-Hop Academy.

In addition to the exciting lineup, State Senator Sarah Anthony will be receiving the "Bridge Builder" Award for her commitment and leadership when it comes to championing equitable development and supporting budget programs that support underrepresented communities, both urban and rural.  She is being recognized for her commitment to connecting communities with resources and opportunities.

Investing in equity practices is an economic imperative. Since 2000, the United States economy lost an estimated $16 trillion due to discrimination, according to a September 2020 study by Citi Group. By addressing the racial wealth gap by 2028, U.S. GDP would grow by an estimated $1.5 trillion, or 6% of its current level, according to an August 2019 McKinsey report.

In response, LEAP has launched a cadre of programs aimed at unlocking the full potential of the Lansing Region’s economy by expanding opportunities for historically disenfranchised populations. LEAP’s Elevate program is an accelerator for Black businesses with individualized business assessment, customized workplan development, and one-on-one technical assistance. LEAP’s Ascend program offers similar support for Latino and Hispanic businesses.

Bob Trezise-1“As we grow the Lansing Region into an economic powerhouse, we’re making sure that no one gets left behind,” said Bob Trezise, (left) chief executive officer of LEAP. “Through our equity programs, we will grow quality jobs, increase entrepreneurship, and build wealth for historically underrepresented communities. The result is a stronger, more competitive economy for everybody.”
