The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) publishes the Medicare Advantage Star Ratings each year to measure the quality of health and drug services received by consumers.
Lansing, Mich.— Physicians Health Plan (PHP) today announced it has earned a Medicare 4.5 (out of 5) Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for a third consecutive year, making it a top health plan in Michigan. This rating is an indication of access to high quality Medicare Advantage plans offered through PHP Medicare.
The CMS Star Ratings provide quality and performance information to Medicare beneficiaries to assist them in choosing their Medicare health and drug plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which kicks off Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. Coverage for beneficiaries begins Jan. 1, 2024.
The Star Ratings Program is consistent with the “Meaningful Measures” framework which focuses on measures related to person-centered care, equity, safety, affordability and efficiency, chronic conditions, wellness and prevention, seamless care coordination, and behavioral health.
PHP Medicare was awarded 5 stars for customer service for both health plan customer service, drug plan customer service, and getting appointments and care quickly.
In addition to member experience, CMS evaluates the quality of care provided by the health plan. This is evaluated through clinical outcomes. Of note, PHP Medicare earned 5 stars for breast cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, and annual flu vaccines. An excellent Star Rating of 5 stars reflects the support PHP Medicare provides its members to access important health screenings and preventative care like mammography and colorectal as well as vaccinations.
“Being a locally owned, community-based health plan allows us to respond to the needs of our members more effectively and efficiently, said Dennis Reese, President and Chief Executive Officer for PHP. “We’re committed to being a trusted local choice for Medicare beneficiaries and the CMS Star Rating of 4.5 is a demonstration of that commitment being carried out in various clinical and administrative measurements.”
PHP Medicare plans are offered in 17 Michigan counties: Bay, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Huron, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Livingston, Montcalm, Sanilac, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Tuscola, and Washtenaw. PHP Medicare plans are marketed as Covenant Advantage (HMO-POS), Sparrow Advantage (HMO-POS), and University of Michigan Health Advantage (HMO-POS). For plan year 2024, PHP Medicare is launching a PPO plan — PHP Medicare Advantage, which is too new to be measured.
