Hearing Examined How Congress Can Unlock Automotive Innovation By Leveraging Semiconductor Chips & Other Technologies
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Maritime, Freight and Ports, convened a field hearing Monday at the Detroit Regional Chamber to examine how Congress can help bolster U.S. innovation for electric and autonomous vehicles by increasing domestic production of semiconductor chips and other technologies, while also delivering economic, environmental, and safety benefits for the American people. Last week, the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing to assess the role semiconductors play in American manufacturing at-large. The field hearing Peters convened helped build on those efforts by further examining how semiconductors impact innovation in the automotive industry specifically.
The hearing – titled “Made in America: The Future of Automotive Innovation and Semiconductor Chips” – featured testimony from leaders on how Michigan can be positioned to continue being a leader in the future of mobility, including Glenn Stevens, Executive Director, MICHauto; Jay Rathert, Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships, KLA; Steve Dawes, Director, UAW Region1D; and Garrick Francis, Vice President of Federal Affairs, Auto Innovators.
Detroit News: Peters, joined by auto industry and labor leaders in Detroit, touts chip legislation
“U.S. Sen. Gary Peters on Monday took a Senate subcommittee hearing about the automotive sector to the Motor City to tout legislation that would support domestic semiconductor chip manufacturing.”

“To prepare for a future defined by electric and autonomous vehicles, [Peters] argued, the U.S. must shore up its supply chains by bolstering domestic production of chips and other vital goods — an imperative he said has been brought into focus by the supply-chain disruptions the U.S. has experienced during the coronavirus pandemic.”
“‘Our supply chains are efficient, but they are not resilient,’" said Peters. “‘Much of this is due to the fact that we're too reliant on overseas production.’"
“Auto parts smaller than a postage stamp are creating big conversations in Michigan.”
“U.S. Sen. Gary Peters brought the national conversation around American production of semiconductors home to Michigan at a field hearing in Detroit.”

“The support from Congress could boost innovation for electric and automatic cars while also delivering economic, environmental, and safety benefits for Americans, according to Peters.”
“Peters secured multiple provisions in the U.S. competitive package that includes Peters' bipartisan investing in Domestic Semiconductor Manufacturing Act.”
“During the field hearing Peters mentioned the part that Michigan has played within the American automobile industry and how America relies on foreign suppliers who are unstable.”
“‘Michigan established the American auto industry, transforming mobility in society and quite frankly built the American middle-class and will continue leading for many years in the future.’" said Sen. Peters.”
“Senator Gary Peters talked about the semiconductor chip shortage that's impacting the auto industry. He says the reshoring of semiconductor production is paramount to preventing shortages in the future.”
“‘Our supply chains are efficient, but they are not resilient. So when something goes wrong, problems pile up very quickly, depriving Americans of the things that they rely on, which also contributes to rising inflation. Much of this is due to the fact that we're too reliant on overseas production.’”
“To help address the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage in our country Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters met with auto industry leaders at the Detroit Regional Chamber today. The discussion examined how Congress can help support U.S. innovation for electric and autonomous vehicle. To do so, a $2 billion dollar supplemental incentive fund was proposed to support domestic production of semiconductor technologies.”

“This proposed fund will help create jobs for many Americans and secure production for American products, which Senator Peters says is essential for the future of our automotive industry.”
“Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters is working to avoid another issue like the semiconductor shortage we've seen during the pandemic. He held a Commerce Committee Field Hearing in Detroit today where he talked about efforts to produce semiconductor technologies in the U.S. The hearing highlighted ways Congress can help support American innovation for electric and self-driving vehicles. Peters says the goal is to deliver economic, environmental and safety benefits for Americans.”

“Peters has led efforts to deal with the ongoing semiconductor shortage that has impacted workers and industries across the country – including us right here in Michigan.”
“A computer chip shortage has caused problems for our country’s supply chain and now Senator Gary Peters is trying to avoid another issue like this. He held a Commerce Committee Hearing in Detroit talking about the efforts to make semiconductor technologies in the U.S. The shortage has disrupted auto production and driven car prices up. Peters highlighted how Congress can support production of electric and self-driving vehicles, something he says will benefit Americans.”
“‘And not only will electric vehicles help save our planet by combating climate change. They will also reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources and protect Americans from unpredictable gas prices.’”
“Senator Gary Peters took part in a hearing today titled ‘Made in America: The Future Automotive Innovation and Semi-Conductor Chips.’ Congress is working to boost U.S. domestic production of semiconductor chips during a nationwide shortage. The shortage has impacted the automotive industry and UAW workers across the country. And in right here in Michigan, auto plants in Michigan have had to tell shifts not to come into work in recent months due to the shortage affecting their production.”
[…]
“‘Not only will it benefit the environment by reducing emissions, which is a huge benefit, but it will also end our need to rely on gas to power our vehicles and remove a major transportation cost, as well as we see potential national security issues for around the world.’”
“And one way to stop these shutdowns is to make the chips right here in the U.S. The United States Senate passes a bill to boost American microchip production and Senator Gary Peters has been one of the driving forces pushing its past passage. He led a meeting at the Detroit Regional Chamber – that a bill would provide $52 billion for chip production. He says this incredibly high tech little device will not only keep assembly lines rolling, but also help lead us into the future.”
“‘Not only will electric vehicles help save our planet by combating climate change, they will also reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources and protect Americans from unpredictable gas prices.’”
“Manufacturing semiconductor chips in Michigan that was the topic of a conference held by Senator Gary Peters in Detroit today. The meeting examined how Congress can help increase the production of semiconductor chips here in the U.S., while also helping our state. Senator Peters said the support from Congress could boost innovation for electric and automatic cars, while also delivering economic, environmental, and safety benefits for Americans. He talked about the role Michigan has traditionally played in America’s automobile industry and the role our state could have in the future.
“‘Michigan established of the American auto industry transforming mobility in society and quite frankly built the American middle class and will continue leading for many years in the future.’”
“Senator Peters secured multiple provisions in the U.S. Competitive Package that includes a bipartisan act investing in domestic semiconductor manufacturing.”
