Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Mike Duggan, Mark Cuban and Richard Florida are among the thought leaders and policymakers featured today

It’s the first full day of the Mackinac Policy Conference, and the Detroit Regional Chamber has lined up an illustrious group of national and local speakers, who are sure to grab the attention of business, community, and policy leaders both on the island or as part of the global livestream audience. 

Some notables on the roster today include well-known entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban; the world’s leading urbanist and international best-selling author, Richard Florida; and our home team’s dynamic duo, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. 

For the 13th consecutive year, Detroit Public TV provides end-to-end coverage of the proceedings with Zoe Clark, Nolan Finley, and Stephen Henderson at the helm, featuring exclusive interviews with leading decision-makers.

Here’s today’s impressive line-up: 

  • 9 a.m. ET: Kat Stafford, national investigative correspondent with The Associated Press, hosts a conversation on the practice of “bridging” through meaningful engagement and community empowerment to improve transparency and build trust, resulting in sustainable policy outcomes. Opening remarks will be made by Faye Alexander Nelson, Michigan director of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Panelists include Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor, State of Michigan; Celina Barrios-Millner, co-vice president, Office of Race and Equity Research, Urban Institute; and Isabel Medellin, global director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Talent Acquisition, Steelcase. 
  • 10:30 a.m. ET: Rip Rapson, president, and CEO of The Kresge Foundation, moderates a future of work conversation with Richard Florida, founder of Creative Class Group and today’s preeminent urbanist, on how cities will drive Michigan’s revival. Anika Goss, CEO, of Detroit Future City, will also join the conversation. 
  • 10:30 a.m. ET: Angelique Power, president, and CEO of The Skillman Foundation, hosts a future of work discussion on how Gen Z is influencing education policy and what’s needed for Michigan’s vibrant future. Panelists include Imani Harris, youth education activist, and communications lead, 482Forward; Evamelo Oleita, co-founder and youth organizer, Black Lives Matter in All Capacities, and member, President’s Youth Council, The Skillman Foundation; and Joe Tate, speaker of the house, State of Michigan. 
  • 12:00 p.m. ET: Sandy K. Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber along with Matt Elliott, president of Bank of America Michigan and chair of the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference, officially open the conference. 
  • 12:20 p.m. ET: Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer welcomes attendees to the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference. 
  • 12:30 p.m. ET: Rick Albin, political reporter, WOOD-TV 8, moderates a conversation on businesses leading with the “Power of &.” Panelists include Tina Freese Decker, president and CEO, Corewell Health; AB Ghosh, chairman, and CEO, Hemlock Semiconductor; Kenneth Kelly, chairman, and CEO, First Independence Bank; and Suzanne Shank, president, and CEO, Siebert Williams Shank & Co., LLC. 
  • 1:15 p.m. ET: Keynote speaker Brian Moynihan, board chair and CEO of Bank of America, sits down with Matt Elliott, president, Bank of America Michigan and chair of the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference.
  • 1:50 p.m. ET: Ida Byrd-Hill, CEO of Automation Workz, delivers brief remarks.
  • 2 p.m. ET: Political Director and Interim General Manager of Michigan Radio, Zoe Clark, hosts a future of work discussion on the talent of tomorrow with guests Lieutenant Governor, State of Michigan Garlin Gilchrist II; President, Grand Valley State University, Philomena V. Mantella; President, University of Michigan, Santa J. Ono; and President of Lansing Community College, Steve Robinson, with opening remarks by President and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan, Jeff Donofrio. 
  • 3:15 p.m. ET: Speakers Sandy K. Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, and Matt Elliott, president, Bank of America Michigan and chair of the 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference, address the topic, “Where is Michigan’s &?’ 
  • 3:30 p.m. ET: KC Crain, president, and CEO of Crain Communications, talks with entrepreneur and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, with an introduction by Vice Chairman for Pistons Sports and Entertainment, Arn Tellem. 
  • 4:10 p.m. ET: Rochelle Riley, director of Arts and Culture for the City of Detroit, delivers brief remarks. 
  • 4:20 p.m. ET: Keynote speaker, City of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan discusses his administration’s efforts with an introduction by Jeffrey Nelson, executive vice president, Strategic Staffing Solutions, and honorary consul, Republic of Lithuania.
