· WORKING TO PASS ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS BILL: Senator Peters is serving on the bipartisan, bicameral conference committee tasked with negotiating a final economic competitiveness bill to make significant investments to create good-paying jobs, strengthen domestic manufacturing and boost U.S. economic competitiveness on the global stage. This package includes his provision with Senator Stabenow to create a $2 billion supplemental incentive fund to support the domestic production of mature semiconductor technologies. Peters has repeatedly raised the need to make our supply chains more resilient for manufactures – big and small – across the board in order to prevent future disruptions and ensure that Michigan and the U.S. can outcompete anyone on the global stage.
· ENACTING LANDMARK BIPARTISAN POSTAL REFORM: As Chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Senator Peters passed his historic bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act into law. The new law passed both chambers with overwhelming bipartisan support and makes the first major reforms to the Postal Service in 15 years. The bill will set the United States Postal Service on a more sustainable financial footing and support the goal of providing long-term reliable service across the country.
· LEADING THE CHARGE TO STRENGTHEN OUR CYBERSECURITY: As Chair of HSGAC, Senator Peters passed into law legislation that required critical infrastructure to report cyber-attacks. The bipartisan legislation unanimously passed the Senate and will require critical infrastructure owners and operators to report to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) if they experience a substantial cyber-attack or if they make a ransomware payment.
o In a recent story, the Washington Post noted that under the Senator Peters’ leadership, Congress is advancing more significant cybersecurity reforms than during any previous term. In just the last few weeks, Congress has sent three of Senator Peters’ cybersecurity bills to the President’s desk and they are expected to be signed into law soon. The bills will:
§ Bolster cybersecurity for state and local governments in Michigan and across the nation;
§ Help recruit, develop and retain highly skilled cybersecurity professionals in the federal workforce; and
§ Secure federal information technology supply chains against security threats.
· Peters has also passed legislation into law to enhance cybersecurity assistance to K-12 educational institutions across the country.
· WORKING TO MAKE OUR INFRASTRUCTURE MORE RESILIENT, HELP COMMUNITIES ADDRESS SHORELINE EROSION, RISING WATER LEVELS & EXTREME FLOODING: As Chair of HSGAC, Senator Peters passed his bipartisan STORM Act into law that will allow local governments to access needed funds to make critical infrastructure upgrades and help mitigate the impact of natural disasters in a more cost-effective way. In the bipartisan infrastructure law, Peters successfully secured $500 million to establish revolving loan funds, thanks to his STORM Act, that can be used to support local infrastructure projects to protect against natural disasters that have put homes, small businesses, property, and communities at risk, and caused millions of dollars in damages.
