Council seeks input from residents to find out what factors makes Michigan an appealing place to call home

Detroit, Mich. The Growing Michigan Together Council has partnered with The Skillman Foundation to host a community picnic for Detroit residents. The Council is tasked with generating ideas that could grow Michigan’s population. The Council will have team members on-site collecting feedback from residents to hear what the deciding factors are for building their future in Michigan.

The community picnic is on Sunday, October 15 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. High School located at 3200 E. Lafayette St., Detroit, MI 48207. There will be inflatables and family-friendly activities as well as complimentary food and drinks.

“Detroit is an economic driver for the region and contributes a rich cultural heritage that’s felt across the state, so it’s important that we hear directly from Detroiters about what it will take to make sure their families are happy and thriving here in Michigan,” said Chief Growth Officer Hilary Doe. “As Chief Growth Officer, but also as a Detroit resident, I look forward to spending a beautiful Pure Michigan fall day with the community as we work together to improve our great state.”

"Young people are needed if we want to actually design a growing and prosperous Michigan. They are the future of this state, brilliant and aspirational, and must be centered in the decisions and investments we make today. Sunday is an important opportunity for Detroiters—especially youth—to voice what they need to stay planted in Michigan, growing their families and communities here," said Angelique Power, president & CEO of The Skillman Foundation and member of the Growing Michigan Together PK-12 Education Workgroup.”

This event is part of the Growing Michigan Together Council’s listening tour that kicked off in August. The Council has hosted approximately 30 events since its inception. Listening to residents and collecting feedback helps capture vibrant, growth-oriented ideas that are incorporated into the Council’s work to help grow Michigan’s population as well as retain and attract talent.
