LANSING, Mich. — Launch Michigan, a nonprofit dedicated to reinventing Michigan’s public education system, today announced updates to its Grants Clock, a new tool designed to provide transparency regarding the public school grant distribution process and hold the state accountable for the efficient distribution of funds for classrooms.

As of November 27, 2024, more than 84% ($3.19 billion) of the $3.8 billion in grants Launch Michigan is tracking for the current fiscal year have been allocated.  

• $213.9 million of $275 million in competitive grants have been allocated.   
• $28.5 million of $126 million in direct grants have been allocated. 
• $1.97 billion of $2.3 billion in formula grants have been allocated.  
• $987.9 million of $1 billion in reimbursement grants have been allocated. 

Launch Michigan celebrates the $101 million in efficiency grants for school districts around the state, representing a critical step in advancing the work that Launch Michigan has long championed. The efficiency grants, available through the Michigan School Aid budget, support school districts and intermediate school districts in conducting feasibility studies and consolidating services or schools under sections 11x, 12c, and 12d. School districts and ISDs can apply for these grant funds through the Grant Electronic Monitoring System.   

The Grants Clock provides updates on the status of each grant, tracking key metrics such as the total amount available, the number of days since the funds became available, and the percentage of funds that have been distributed.  

In addition to tracking the distribution of funds, Launch Michigan has put forward several recommendations to streamline the grant process. These include prioritizing grants with the most direct impact on students, simplifying the application system by connecting it to existing district platforms, providing additional funding for the Michigan Department of Education to hire necessary staff and update IT systems, and partnering with organizations that can provide technical assistance to districts.
