Jeffrey Mosher, Thurs., Nov 2nd visited a book release with local author Dr. Renée Canady, CEO of Michigan Public Health Institute.

Watch Dr. Canady discuss her new book and the book signing event she took part in November 2nd, in the YouTube video shared below:

This interview took place at Socialight Society in the Lansing Mall, just before she had an event that included a Q&A and reading of an excerpt of her new book, 'Room at the Table'.

This conversation covered several points including
• What made you decide to write this book now?
• What surprised you most when you got into public health?
• How would you explain equity and why is it so important to understand?
• What’s the biggest thing you want people to take away from this book?
• What would you say to someone who doesn’t see themselves as a leader?
• What makes a great leader?
• How has the health equity landscape changed?

Dr. Renée Canady, former Ingham County Health Officer, is the current CEO of MPHI, where she is the first Black CEO and first female CEO. She's marking another first -- the release of her first book, Room at the Table: A Leader's Guide to Advancing Health Equity and Justice, and doing so by partnering with Socialight Society, a Lansing small business owned by a fellow Black, female leader.

We’ve all heard the terms diversity, equity and inclusion. They’ve even become points of contention in many spaces. But how do we begin to truly understand the “so what” behind these terms? How do we integrate the issues of equity and justice that challenge us to put these ideas into action? How can we all see ourselves as leaders and incorporate them into our lives to shape a more promising future for our communities and ourselves?
Dr. Renée Branch Canady, CEO of Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), has not only encountered these ideas but has also dedicated years to making them a reality for our public health and healthcare systems. In “Room at the Table,” releasing on Sept. 26, Canady shares her wisdom through her stories on the frontlines as an equity public health leader.
