More about John: John W. Mashni, Jr. is a partner in Taylor English’s corporate department. Mr. Mashni serves as a trusted advisor to entrepreneurs, business owners, and creative individuals. With extensive experience in emerging technologies and entertainment, he focuses his practice on business, intellectual property, tax, startups, nonprofits, and tax-exempt organizations.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mashni has empowered his clients to find creative paths to success. He loves to help make his clients’ passions a reality while skillfully navigating any legal hurdles they may face along the way. As an experienced entrepreneur, business owner, best-selling author, and investor, Mr. Mashni has a unique perspective on what his clients need, when they need it, and how to accomplish their goals. He can uniquely relate to both artists and entrepreneurs, having served in both roles in his own life. With the aim of making a long-lasting impact, Mr. Mashni understands the focus and determination required to help his clients reach their objectives, execute game-changing deals, and create a space in which they feel heard and respected.
Mr. Mashni also has experience forming and advising tax-exempt and 501(c)(3) organizations, including public charities, private foundations, and associations. He has also worked with film and television producers, musicians, and authors to help bring their creative endeavors to the market.
Prior to joining Taylor English, Mr. Mashni served as a shareholder and leader of the information technology team at a large Michigan-based law firm. In addition to his practice, he teaches tax at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in its Corporate and Tax LL.M. programs. He also has taught a graduate-level course at Michigan State University, and he is an in-demand speaker on numerous topics, including business, marketing, creativity, nonprofits, and tax. Before earning his law degree, Mr. Mashni attended the New York Film Academy and managed the media department of a large leadership development company, where he gained experience managing a creative team and in FTC compliance and regulation. In addition to his work in marketing and media, Mr. Mashni also worked as a freelance director, audio engineer, photographer, and visual effects artist.
Mr. Mashni lives in DeWitt, Michigan, with his wife and four children where he is an active member of his community and supports various nonprofits. Additionally, in his spare time, he writes children’s books with his kids.
