Technologically nimble, well-educated and pragmatic, Gen Z-ers are poised to join a workforce where new competencies and new ways of thinking are musts for the future. Averaging 60 million strong in the U.S. alone, this cohort is expected to comprise 30% of the workforce by 2030.

Born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, members of Gen Z are approaching higher education and future careers with a fresh mindset, seeking practical skills and hands-on experiences to empower them in an ever-evolving job market. This generation values flexibility, purpose and meaningful connection in careers, prioritizing work-life balance and personal growth.

As Gen Z-ers embark on their careers, they bring with them high hopes for a future where work aligns with their passions, enabling positive societal impact and fostering constant learning. But will they opt to stay in Michigan and likewise contribute to the state’s growth?

Today at noon, in partnership with the Michigan Learning Channel (MLC), One Detroit producer and Future of Work host Will Glover sits down with three members of Gen Z — Brooke Snow, Samantha Chiang and Kendall Murray — to discuss how they and their peers are approaching higher education, their hopes for the future, what they want from employers and a career and more.

This Future of Work town hall is undertaken through support from GM and Bank of America and was prerecorded live on May 10 at the Marygrove Conservancy in Detroit.

It highlights the new MLC series, The Career Center — a career exploration resource for young people and the adults who surround them, as well as a new national collaboration, Tech Jobs Explained, that looks at Detroit’s tech industry, beginning next month.

This energetic conversation amplifies the power of youth voices and the unique ways public media can bring people together around important topics and conversation to transform the communities we serve.

This town hall continues One Detroit’s cumulative, ongoing conversation involving the future of work. To learn more, visit here.
