When it comes to the commercialization of research projects, Michigan’s larger universities typically take center stage. Ferris State University, however, is ramping up its research efforts and is getting noticed by federal and statewide programs.

Jeffrey Mosher speaks with both Denise Graves, university relations director on the MEDC entrepreneurship and innovation team, and
Tom Dowling, FSU assistant dean and director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs about Ferris State University researcher receives national, statewide recognition. To hear Denise and Tom's interviews click play on the podcasts shared below.

They also discuss how Ferris State University is making waves in the research field both nationally and at the statewide level.  Dr. Nybo’s grant awards from the National Institute of Health ($385,406) and National Science Foundation ($407,900)—making him the first researcher at FSU to receive such recognition. And Finally how organizations like the MEDC are helping to foster research and start up growth at FSU.

Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry Dr. Eric Nybo received a $61,500 ADVANCE grant, funded through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Entrepreneurship & Innovation initiative, to jump start his research and lab work for creating a comprehensive platform that will facilitate development of new drug leads for use in human cancer. Based on his work through the ADVANCE grant, Dr. Nybo was awarded two National Institutes of Health grants to continue his research in the amounts of $385,406 and $390,00—making him the first researcher at FSU to receive such award.

Two additional FSU researchers have also received support from the ADVANCE grant program to accomplish milestones toward commercial milestones:

  • Dr. Sonali Kurup, associate professor of Medicinal Chemistry, received an ADVANCE grant of $47,200. Dr. Kurup is using the funds to synthesize, design and evaluate molecules against cancer cells and enzymes. The ADVANCE Grant will help Dr. Kurup further identity compounds for animal models and secure a patent.
  • Dr. Daniel Taylor, associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs, received a $45,000 ADVANCE grant. Dr. Taylor is working with engineering students at FSU to create a cochlear implant device that gives secure connection between glasses and implants that can be easily taken on and off throughout the day. As an ophthalmologist and father of a deaf son, Dr. Taylor saw a niche need in the medical industry and plans to use his ADVANCE grant to take his innovation from prototype to commercialization.
