This year Back to the Bricks® has partnered with the University of Michigan-Flint’s College of Innovation & Technology to offer participants and spectators a dazzling display of Racing is STEM in Action. This year through this newly formed partnership, Back to the Bricks® will welcome celebrity guest, and TV superstar, the DONKMASTER, Sage Thomas to Flint Michigan.

FLINT – Summer is in full force, with hot summer days and even warmer nights. Car shows and
cruises are taking place all around Genesee County and the surrounding areas, and Back to the
Bricks® is just around the corner ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary year of FUN, bringing the roar of cars, music, and more into the Vehicle City. The annual event attracts more than 500,000 car enthusiasts to Genesee County every year, reestablishing Flint as the unofficial automobile mecca of Michigan. Founded by Al Hatch and friends 20 years ago, Back to the Bricks® has grown substantially, and now includes thousands of registered vehicles, as well as thousands of spectators and automobile aficionados.

Tune Up Week is scheduled throughout Genesee County, taking over 6 communities Aug. 5-10. And the Main Event, which is a showcase for classic, custom, and collectible vehicles of all kinds, starts Monday, August 12th at the Birch Run Speedway, and continues with events all week, until Saturday, Aug. 17 when the big car show takes over downtown Flint.

The Main Event’s six-day extravaganza begins with a Car Show and Concert in Birch Run at the
Speedway on Monday, August 12th. Then off to the family-oriented party “Bricks Flicks” at the
nostalgic US-23 Drive-In Theater on Tuesday, August 13th. As the week progresses, excited crowds will line the streets for the “Rolling Cruises,” taking place on Aug. 14 and Aug. 15. Friday, August 16th the festival will host a car show, Cruise N Concert, with The Gobies as the opening act, and local artists Old Days a Chicago Tribute Band headlining this year’s concert on the ALL-NEW Bricks. Thousands will stroll the brick streets on Saturday, August 17th to admire vehicles of every age and description, take pictures, buy souvenirs, and enjoy the fun.

This year Back to the Bricks® has partnered with the University of Michigan-Flint’s College of
Innovation & Technology to offer participants and spectators a dazzling display of *STEM through Racing. The partnership was established by Executive Director of Back to the Bricks® Amber Taylor and Assistant Professor E. Shirl Donaldson, PH.D. PMP. The idea of attracting more youth to the event through the power of STEM came to Taylor and Donaldson, their idea was “Hatched”, a tribute to our founder Al Hatch that would pay honor to classic cars but motivate our youth to be more engaged. The partnership was fully backed and supported by the Back to the Bricks® Board of Directors, Committee, and Chairman of the Events Kevin Murphy.

“Bringing this type of display and celebrity to Flint is not only going to mean more spectators, but more youth, inspiring them to learn more about these amazing automobiles and the power they can have through a little ingenuity and creativity,” said the Chairman of Events Kevin Murphy.

The Flat Lot is the main display area of the 20th anniversary festivities located between Kearsley and 1st Street running between Harrison and Saginaw Street. This year through this newly formed partnership, Back to the Bricks® will welcome celebrity guest, and TV superstar, the DONKMASTER, Sage Thomas to Flint Michigan.

Sage has created the world’s 1st sanctioned body for the sport of big wheel racing, using classic cars and STEM technology. The NDRA organizes and scales big wheel racing to create a truly national competition. Racers participate in a fixed number of sanctioned races around the country competing for points. At the end of the season, champions will be crowned for each class. Meet the DONKMASTER himself and see the other special displays with UM Flint’s College of Innovation & Technology featuring the Flint Soap Box Derby, RC Racing Cars for the Kids, and the UM-Flint Baja team, it’s a full display of fun, mobility, technology and should be exciting for all ages.

“Donks exist at the intersection of informal STEM and cultural relevance. Exploring these vehicles will engage the inquisitive minds of youth in Flint and Genesee County.” Said Donaldson, she went on to say, “Racing is STEM in action. These cars go fast because of applied math and science. We hope that becomes more obvious to people.”

Executive Director Taylor said, “Working with Professor Donaldson has been a real treat. We knew we wanted to bring someone to Flint who could bridge the age gap between spectators and participants, STEM and Technology, with horsepower, racing, and Classic Cars. I can’t wait to see the amazing display and see the spectators, participants, and families enjoying the show together.”
