Four community development projects will bring needed housing, new vibrancy to downtowns in Upper Peninsula • Supported communities include Iron Mountain, Houghton and Munising
LANSING, Mich. – Projects that will bring needed housing and support growth and economic recovery in three communities in the Upper Peninsula have received support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has announced.

Marquette County – Tuesday Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the creation of the Office of Rural Development, which will be housed under the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). MDARD is under the leadership of Upper Peninsula native and former legislator, Gary McDowell. Rural economic developers and their partners from across the state have advocated for such a move, bringing a similar concept forward in 2020 for consideration. The Governor’s actions today reinforces her support for our rural communities and acknowledges their uniqueness.

‘Twas The Night Before Amy’s Christmas
Well folks, one of my Christmas wishes came early this year. You all know Don Ryan of the Ryan Report, but what you may not know is that he is a founding member of the Lake Superior Community Partnership and a huge mentor of mine. Over the years, Don has gotten me out of my comfort zone more times than I can count and taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to.

We find ourselves on the back end of the November election cycle. I would imagine that most of us would agree it is time to move forward, putting our differences aside, and become a part of the solution required for our country to heal.

As an economic developer, I know that 80% of a region’s growth comes from within. Meaning the retention and expansion of current businesses plus those entrepreneurs starting businesses make up the bulk of jobs and investment created. In summary, local matters.
