The Michigan state average is down 5 cents from last week

DEARBORN, Mich., (August 26, 2024) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 5 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.41 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 39 cents less than this time last month and 37 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $51 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $7 from 2023's highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand crept higher from 9.04 million b/d to 9.19. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks fell from 222.2 to 220.6 million barrels, but gasoline production increased, averaging 9.8 million daily.

At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, WTI fell by $1.24 to settle at $71.93 a barrel. The EIA reports that crude oil inventories decreased by 4.6 million barrels from the previous week. At 426.0 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 5% below the five-year average for this time of year.

"Gas prices continue to fall, with Michigan motorists seeing the lowest prices since early June," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "Mild gasoline demand, steady supply, and low oil costs may cause pump prices to slide further."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.44 per gallon, about 10 cents less than last week’s average and 35 cents less than this same time last year.

• Combine errands to limit driving time.

• Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
• Remove excess weight in your vehicle.
• Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
