President & CEO’s Message

After 21 days and 225 applications, the Bay County Small Business Grant Program is well on its way to awarding $1,000,000 in grant awards to eligible and COVID impacted small businesses in Bay County, MI, USA! True to our announcement at our Annual Report Meeting in April, the Bay County Small Business Grant Program went LIVE beginning May 10, 2022, at 12:00 PM and recently closed on May 31, 2022, at 5:00 PM.

We are grateful to the Bay County Board of Commissioners who made this program possible by proactively allocating funding to small businesses and to the Bay County Small Business Grant Program Review Committee which is actively reviewing those applications. We thank you and are thankful to members of our Board of Directors who have stepped up to support our team throughout this process.

Many of our partners, who work with businesses and in communities statewide, have commended us and our community for utilizing American Rescue Plan Act funding to support small businesses in this way. We have also been asked to consult and assist other communities in implementing similar programs. For this, I am proud and honored to be a resident of our community.

Combined, with the City of Bay City’s small business grant program, our community has pledged over $1.3 Million total to disproportionately impacted small businesses!

We received applications from all corners of the county and from all types of impacted businesses. Our team will continue to work and advocate to do what is necessary to support the diversity of businesses in Bay County that make our community a great place to live, work, worship, and play. We look forward to sharing the awarded businesses with you in the next few weeks.

Thank you for your support!

Small business grants help Bay City entrepreneurs build a better community
As the COVID-19 cases rise and fall, one thing remains constant. The pandemic has wreaked havoc for small businesses.

The bright spot, though, is how communities have risen to help business owners weather the storm.

Jessica Hill, who owns Omoni Boutique in Uptown Bay City, says programs that help businesses such as hers overcome difficulties related to supply chain disruptions, worker shortages, decreased customer traffic, and other pandemic-related issues have been invaluable for her company. Continue reading here

“We’ve decided to venture to another spot in Bay City. We purchased the former Hooters Building in Bay City and we will be opening that into another little bit different concept but O’s on the water. As we begin to develop the location I’ve been in contact with Bay Future weekly in how they can support us and how they can help us develop that site. We’re looking forward to being a huge part of growing that community,” said Marc Owczarzak Owner of O’s Pub & Grill

The Great Lakes Bay Region 5 Partnership and the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance have come together to Launch a Regional Business Attraction Initiative

Collaboration is not foreign to the Economic Development Organizations in Region 5, and neither is business attraction, but in response to the COVID pandemic, these economic development organizations have thought it necessary to partner together to develop and employ a plan to attract new businesses to Region 5 in Michigan which includes the eight counties of Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland and Saginaw.

The initiative, launched by seven regional economic development organizations who represent more than a half million people in the middle eastern portion of Michigan, bordering Lake Huron, has branded the geographic area as Great Lakes Bay. Michigan. Centered. Read Press Release
