President & CEO’s Message

The Small Business and Entrepreneurial Support program will provide consulting, education, and research to help small businesses in Bay County launch, grow, transition, and innovate. This program is the third of three programs being executed with our partners a part of the $2 Million proposal made possible through the Bay County Board of Commissioners’ allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.

The Bay County Small Business Grant Program and the Workforce Talent Attraction & Retention Program are well underway. More to come on those two programs!

To administer this program, our team will work with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to hire a consultant who will offer critical tools, resources, and guides to Bay County businesses in need. Assistance includes but is not limited to a comeback toolkit, consulting support, small business training, and tech commercialization support.

The focuses of the program are to:
  • Provide confidential one-on-one consulting services to small businesses
  • Help businesses initiate, grow and improve operations
  • Facilitate business workshops on topics relevant to Bay County businesses
  • Help businesses best utilize federal, state, and regional economic development initiatives and support programs as well as strategic private sector partners
The business consultant will work out of our Bay Future Office at 812 N Water Street in Downtown Bay City so they can best connect with clients throughout Bay County. We’re looking forward to welcoming the consultant to our team soon!

Michigan Sugar Company President and CEO Mark Flegenheimer to Retire

After a 40-year career serving the sugar industry, Michigan Sugar Company President and CEO Mark Flegenheimer has announced his plans to retire.

Since the formation of the co-op and under Flegenheimer’s leadership, annual sugar production has doubled from roughly 630 million pounds to 1.2 billion pounds, while the amount of fuel used in the factories has been reduced by more than 40%. Flegenheimer has recently overseen a major upgrade to Michigan Sugar’s Croswell factory, and last year he led efforts to secure a $75+ million investment to build a molasses desugarization facility at the company’s Bay City factory. That facility is scheduled to come online in fall 2023.

Mark, thank you for your leadership and for being a fierce advocate of economic development and community support in Bay County, the Great Lakes Bay Region, and throughout the State of Michigan! Congratulations on your retirement! You will be missed!
