Former President John F. Kennedy believed that free trade and economic development could help create world peace and security. As a strong proponent of international trade liberalization, he worked to reduce tariffs and promote economic cooperation through bilateral and multilateral agreements.

Fast forward to today: Geopolitical tensions have given rise to the reconfiguration of global supply chains, trade routes and foreign investment flows. This is largely attributed to conflicts in the Middle East, Russian aggression in Ukraine and China’s meddling in the East and South China Seas. Beijing’s territorial claims have not endeared themselves to the norms of acceptable behavior by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
