The Michigan state average is now 11 cents lower than a week ago
DEARBORN, Mich., (January 5, 2026) – Gas prices in Michigan are down 11 cents from last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.70 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 18 cents less than this time last month and 44 cents less than this time last year.
Motorists are paying an average of $40 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $10 from 2025’s highest price last August.
While recent developments in Venezuela have drawn attention, oil prices remain relatively stable. Friday’s closing price for U.S. crude oil was $57.32 per barrel, up just 58 cents from the previous week. Although Venezuela was once a significant producer of crude oil, its exports have been limited for years due to sanctions. Analysts say global supply remains sufficient, though any major disruption could put upward pressure on prices.
“Gas prices across Michigan have dropped, with motorists seeing the lowest pump prices since February of 2021,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.
Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.77 per gallon, about 4 cents less than last week’s average and 34 cents less than this same time last year.

- Combine errands to limit driving time.
- Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
- Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
- Remove excess weight in your vehicle.
- Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.

Every day up to 130,000 stations in the nation and more than 4,200 stations in Michigan are surveyed based on credit card swipes and direct feeds in cooperation with the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) and Wright Express for unmatched statistical reliability. All average retail prices in this report are for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline.
