Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2 Endorses Mike Duggan, Independent, for Governor of Michigan

Michigan Business Network: LRCC Econ Club Luncheon Duggan press conference

DETROIT – July 9, 2025 Today, the Michigan Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 2 (BAC Local 2), representing more than 3,700 skilled tradespeople across the state, announced its endorsement of Mike Duggan’s Independent campaign for governor of Michigan. The members of BAC Local 2 are backing Duggan because of his record of delivering real results, his unwavering support for the trades, his nonpartisan, no-nonsense approach to getting things done and his history of delivering real change.

Mike Duggan has supported workers his entire career. As mayor of Detroit, he launched a wave of downtown revitalization that put thousands of BAC Local 2 members to work. These projects helped reshape the city’s skyline and economy, and would not have been possible without Mike’s leadership and the incredible skill of Michigan’s tradespeople.

“Mike Duggan is the reason I was working in downtown Detroit when no one else was,” said Brett Gierak, president of BAC Local 2. “Duggan brought development back and he made sure union trades were at the center of it. That meant work for our members, growth for our union and real opportunity for young people entering the trades. Mike Duggan doesn’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat. He’ll work with you to get the job done. That’s exactly what Michigan needs.”

Duggan’s investment in the future of the trades has been a critical component of growing the city’s workforce and economy. His administration helped launch a partnership between the City of Detroit, the Randolph Career and Technical Center and unions like BAC Local 2 to expand career and technical education (CTE) in public high schools. That partnership pays instructor salaries and builds direct-entry pipelines into union apprenticeship programs, offering Detroit students a path to stable, good-paying careers in the skilled trades.

Duggan’s leadership also played a pivotal role in Detroit’s downtown revitalization. Large-scale investments broke ground because of the stable, forward-thinking environment he fostered. Those developments translated directly into jobs for bricklayers and other union members.

“I’m honored to have the support of the BAC Local 2,” said Duggan. “In Detroit, we showed what happens when you put politics aside and just get to work. BAC Local 2 members helped reshape the city’s future, brick by brick. Together, we built opportunities and pathways into the trades for our kids. Lansing needs the same people-over-politics, results-over-rhetoric mindset and I’m ready to be the one to change that.”

The members of BAC Local 2 join nearly 25,000 union men and women and more than 160 clergy and faith leaders across Michigan in endorsing Duggan for governor. Mike Duggan is running as an Independent to end the toxic partisanship and deliver practical, proven leadership focused on jobs, education, infrastructure and public safety for every community in Michigan.
