LANSING, Mich., July 1—Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Michigan chapter hosted U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer on June 30 for a tour of Shafer Redi Mix’s Lansing concrete plant, 1 of 7 locations that Shafer Cos. operates in Michigan.

“As a proud merit shop and ABC member for over 40 years, we were honored to host Secretary Chavez-DeRemer at our Lansing plant,” said Doug Shafer, owner of Shafer Companies. “We support the secretary’s deregulation initiatives that back business growth in our region and within Michigan’s construction industry.”

U.S. Michigan Reps. Tom Barrett and John James as well as a member of U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg’s office were in attendance to greet Secretary Chavez-DeRemer and Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling.

The secretary discussed several relevant issues to the construction industry, including zoning and operation constraints, streamlining permitting and environmental compliance.

“ABC is proud to represent over 85% of Michigan’s construction industry and we applaud Secretary Chavez-DeRemer and the DOL for prioritizing the concerns and efforts of our members to promote growth and cut bureaucratic red tape,” said Angela Madarang, president of ABC Greater Michigan.

Secretary Chavez-DeRemer visited the Shafer Redi Mix concrete plant as part of her America at Work Tour.
