UM Health-Sparrow News: Lansing Latino Health Alliance Honors UM Health-Sparrow Team Member

LANSING, Mich. – A University of Michigan Health-Sparrow orthopedic tech and medical assistant has been named this year’s Outstanding Latino Caregiver in awards offered by the Lansing Latino Health Alliance.

MBN: Sparrow VictoriaVictoria Burt, who works in the orthopedic trauma and sports medicine departments, was lauded for providing patient-centered care to all and her unwavering commitment to prioritizing what’s best for her patients.

“Victoria’s dedication to her patients and her colleagues is inspiring. She personifies the values of compassionate care and inclusivity that define UM Health-Sparrow,” said Margaret Dimond, Ph.D., regional president of University of Michigan Health. “We are proud to celebrate her commitment to making an impact in the lives of our patients.”

Encouraged by her sister who worked in health care, Burt earned a medical assistant certification from Ross Medical Education Center. She has worked in orthopedics since 2006 and at UM Health-Sparrow for the past six years, helping patients heal and regain mobility.

“I’ve always enjoyed orthopedics. I love this type of medicine and helping fix broken people,” Burt said. “Seeing people get better—walking, running, healing—makes every day rewarding.”

She also values the supportive environment at UM Health-Sparrow, especially working alongside other women in the field. Burt hopes to inspire others to consider a career in health care.

“If your heart is drawn to it, do it. Don’t stop getting educated. It’s such a rewarding career,” she said.

Established in 2016, the Outstanding Latino Caregiver Award recognizes exceptional Latino and Hispanic caregivers at UM Health-Sparrow and McLaren hospitals who make a significant difference in patients’ lives, go above and beyond expectations and demonstrate professionalism. Community members and UM Health-Sparrow team members submitted nominations, which were reviewed by an internal selection committee.

Burt was recognized at a community event held by the Lansing Latino Health Alliance yesterday, April 1, at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. To learn more about compassionate care at UM Health-Sparrow, visit UofMHealthSparrow.org.
