Ford and GM are investing heavily in to self-driving technology. GM specifically has invested $500 million in Lyft, and laid out plans to develop an on-demand network of self-driving cars with the ride-sharing service.
This is the largest Detroit-Sillicon Valey crossover deal to date, as automakers work out how to respond to the rush of technology companies such as Apple and others in reshaping the auto industry. Ford is planning to triple the size of its fleet of self-driving test cars to accelerate vehicle development.
