Women are Driving Michigan’s Workforce Growth, But Barriers Like Child Care Access and Pay Gaps Remain

A recent report from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity reveals a concerning trend: while women now constitute nearly half of the state’s workforce, the pay gap between men and women is widening.

Women in Michigan now earn approximately 79 cents for every dollar men make, a decrease from 82 cents the previous year. This disparity is attributed to persistent structural barriers, including a lack of access to affordable child care, pay inequity in female-dominated fields like health care, and broader occupational differences.
