LANSING, Mich. – Monique Stanton, CEO and President of the Michigan League for Public Policy, released the following statement on behalf of the Protect MI Care Coalition in support of Governor Whitmer’s proposal to strengthen Medicaid funding in the FY 2027 state budget following federal funding cuts:
“Michigan is facing a real and immediate budget challenge driven by federal actions that threaten the stability of our Medicaid program and the healthcare coverage that 2.5 million Michiganders rely on every day. The Governor’s FY 2027 budget proposal recognizes that reality and takes responsible steps to keep our budget balanced while protecting coverage for our most vulnerable residents.
“By identifying new, targeted revenue to help close the funding gap created by H.R. 1, the Whitmer administration is putting forward a balanced approach that protects access to care for seniors, people with disabilities, children, and working families across Michigan. When Medicaid funding is cut, families feel it first through lost access to care, higher costs, and added strain on hospitals and providers. The Governor’s plan helps prevent that instability and protects families amid mounting economic uncertainty.
“The Protect MI Care Coalition supports a balanced approach that protects Medicaid as a core pillar of Michigan’s health care system. We look forward to connecting with lawmakers to ensure final budget decisions keep Michiganders covered, maintain the quality of care, and prevent harmful coverage losses as federal changes take effect.”
