The Michigan state average is 4 cents more than this time last week

DEARBORN, Mich., (February 2, 2026) – Gas prices in Michigan are up 4 cents from a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.90 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 17 cents more than this time last month but still 14 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $43 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $7 from 2025’s highest price last August.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 7.83 million b/d to 8.75 million. Total domestic gasoline supply increased from 257 million barrels to 257.2 million. Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.6 million barrels per day.

At the close of Wednesday’s formal trading session, WTI rose 82 cents to settle at $63.21 a barrel. The EIA reports crude oil inventories decreased by 2.3 million barrels from the previous week. At 423.8 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 3% below the five-year average for this time of year.

“Drivers across Michigan are seeing a slight uptick in prices at the pump,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Gas demand increased last week as people topped off their tanks before the deep freeze and winter storm rolled in.”

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is  $2.93 per gallon, about 3 cents more than last week’s average but still 21 cents less than this same time last year.

Ways to Save on Gasoline

  • Combine errands to limit driving time.
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
  • Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle.
  • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
